*A dharma teacher will offer free orientation on Sundays at 8:45 before practice. This is not a class or open house, but an overview for anyone who wishes to dive in or review the forms.

What takes place at practice?

All practice sessions consist of chanting and 30 minutes of meditation. The Saturday session also includes bowing and a Kong-an reading. Here are some examples of Kong-ans. The Sunday practice session includes a Dharma Talk at the end, during which a member typically shares an experience, relates it to the teachings, and facilitates a discussion about how this affects our daily lives and our practice. Whoever gives the Dharma Talk brings snacks for the group and we all finish with coffee, tea, and lively conversation.

How do you meditate?

Although posture is important in the practice of Zen, there are many which are effective. Some members sit in full or half lotus, some use meditation benches, and some sit in chairs. The most important thing is to sit with a straight back and in a balanced manner, comfortable enough to sustain for a sitting period. Specifics on meditation practice will be offered in the intro class. Please call us or email the Director to schedule the class.
